310dafd6c9 Retry persist check db checks up to 5 times 
The 1 second delay on each iteration helps ensure that the data is
written to disk before the check, on high load scenarios.

fe4343dac7 Tests: Add feature guards 
This allows test runners to set environment variables to let tests know which features are available. This is done by the cmake tests, but probably won't be extended to the make tests.
